Peshawar Zalmi edged pass Multan Sultans by a margin of 5 runs in the 9th match of Pakistan Super League, season nine. The match saw both teams fighting tooth and nail until the very last ball.

Peshawar Zalmi won by a narrow margin of 5 runs

With Multan requiring 22 in the last over, Iftikhar Ahmed made a brave effort by smashing two boundaries and a six but could not get his team over the line. With just 6 required in 2 balls, Iftikhar was removed when wicket keeper Mohammad Haris insisted to take review for caught-behind. The last delivery saw Naveen ul haq shattering the stumps, falling Multan just short of the target.

For Zalmi, Arif Yaqoob took three wickets, while Luke Wood, Salman Irshad and Naveen ul haq got 2 wickets each.

Chasing a target of 180, Multan faced an early setback when their skipper Mohammad Rizwan departed for a duck in the third over, courtesy of Luke Wood’s delivery moving away from Rizwan. However, Yasir Khan showed resilience with a steady 43, but failed to accelerate the innings.

It was Dawid Malan who changed the game by smashing 52 runs off just 25 balls, but his dismissal shifted the pressure back to Multan.

With 50 required off 4 over, the debutant Arif Yaqoob made a significant breakthrough by sending Khushdil back, keeping Peshawar Zalmi on the driving seat. Nonetheless, Usama Mir’s blitz of two consecutive sixes injected hopes for Multan Sultans, but his dismissal swung the game back in Zalm’s favor.

A controversial decision regarding a boundary catch when Willey tried to hit a six added to the drama, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. With 24 required off 2 overs, Luke Wood delivered an exceptional over, conceding just 2 runs with a wicket of Abbas Afridi.

Earlier, opting to bat after winning the toss, Peshawar zalmi saw an early blow when Saim Ayub departed for just 7 runs. However, Haseebullah Khan, who was promoted up the order, provided Zalmi a much-needed spart by scoring 37 off 18 balls. Babar and Haseebullah added 46 runs in the 2nd wicket partnership. However, Usama Mir dismissed both in his successive overs.

Pual Walter scored quick 16 off 8, while Mohammad Haris once again could not accelerate the innings. Rovman Powell added 21 runs off 11 balls. Luke Wood’s crucial 17 runs took Zalmi to a total of 179/8.

For Multan, Mohammad Ali, David Willey and Usama Mir got 2 wickets each.

Luke Wood was player of the match for his incredible bowling spell 2/13(4) and important 17(12) runs.

Turning Point:

The last ball of the 17th over in the second innings proved to be the turning point of the match. Arif Yaqoob, with two wickets alongside being hit for two sixes, the dangerous David Willey’s wicket off the last ball shifted the momentum in Peshawar Zalmi’s favor.
