Exposing the Cracks: A Look at Zalmi's Alarming Run Leaks
Opinion - Muhammad Waqas
The 9th edition of Pakistan Super League is witnessing a few exciting contests. The ongoing season has been a tale of two sides for Peshawar Zalmi. They sit comfortably with four wins in six games, but a closer look reveals a cause for concern – their bowling attack, particularly at the death.
While victories are always welcome, Zalmi's wins have come despite, not because of, their bowling. Zalmi's victories have been tight escapes, not dominant displays. In three separate matches, they've conceded a staggering number of runs in the death overs: 119 in 10 overs against Lahore Qalandars, another 119 in 60 balls against Islamabad United (bailed out by a spectacular performance from Arif Yaqoob), and a hefty 127 in 10 overs against Multan Sultans. This translates to an alarming economy rate of 11.90 in the death overs for two consecutive games, and a near-disastrous 12.80 in another.
These wins shouldn't mask a fundamental flaw. While their opponents might have faltered under pressure with the bat, credit shouldn't solely go to Zalmi's bowling. They haven't exactly troubled the batters, instead offering easy runs in the death.
The current trend cannot continue. As the tournament progresses, teams will iron out their batting woes, and strong bowling attacks will be the difference between victory and defeat. The upcoming high-pressure playoff matches could expose Zalmi's bowling frailties if they don't address this issue urgently.
Peshawar Zalmi has the potential to be a real contender as they are one-time PSL champions as well as the only franchise in PSL history to qualify for the playoffs every season. Peshawar Zalmi's management and bowling unit need a serious reality check. They must dissect their death bowling strategies, identify weaknesses, and implement corrective measures. Otherwise, their impressive win record could come crashing down in the most crucial stages of the tournament.
