Islamabad United successfully chased down the highest target in Pakistan Super League 9, third highest in the history of the tournament.
This win propels United into the playoffs alongside Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi, leaving just one remaining spot up for grabs between Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings.
Chasing a massive target, Islamabad got off
to a worrisome start, losing Alex Hales and Salman Ali Agha within the first
two overs. However, skipper Shadab Khan stepped up to the challenge, anchoring
the chase. He formed a crucial 141-run partnership with Colin Munro, reviving
Islamabad’s hopes and putting them in a commanding position.
After Shadab’s departure for 54 off 31 balls,
Munro took over the mantle, playing a sensational knock of 84 runs from just 40
balls decorated with nine boundaries and five sixes. However, suddenly, concerns
were raised for Islamabad as Munro was dismissed followed by Azam Khan’s duck. Despite
the setbacks, Haider Ali (19) and Faheem Ashraf’s (23) cameos provided valuable
support down the order, keeping United in contention.
With 13 required off the last over, Abbas
Afridi struck and removed Faheem Ashraf, after being hit for a boundary. With 7
runs required off 2 balls, Imad Wasim displayed Nerves of steel and hit a six straight
down the ground. He finished the game with a boundary on the last ball, guiding
Islamabad towards a decisive win.
For Multan Sultans, David Willey was the
most economical bowled with 1/30 (4), While Abbas Afridi finished his figures
with 3/40 (4). Mohammad Ali grabbed a couple of scalps and Chris Jordan picked
up a wicket.
Earlier, Multan Sultans had a mixed start, managing
58 runs in the powerplay while losing two wickets. However, Usman Khan and Johnson
Charles put together a scintillating 86-run partnership off just 50 balls. With
Charles quickfire 42 off 18 balls came to an end, Usman continued to onslaught
and hit second successive hundred, becoming only player to hit two centuries in
a single PSL season. Khan’s unbeaten 100 off 50 balls power Multan to post 228/4,
the highest total of the ongoing PSL season.
Naseem Shah dismissed a batter for 31 runs,
Faheem and Hunain Shah finished with figures 2/32 (3) and 1/29 (2)
respectively.
