Quetta Gladiators secured a playoff spot in
Pakistan Super League 9 with a thrilling six-wicket win over Lahore Qalandars.
The win came down to the last ball, with Mohammad Wasim Jr. smashing a last-ball six off Shaheen Afridi to seal the deal. The two-time defending champions, Lahore Qalandars finished with only one win in ten league games.
Chasing 167 for victory, Jason Roy (18) and
skipper Rilee Rossouw (13) fell early, putting pressure on Quetta. The left-arm
pacer Jahandad Khan struck to dismiss both the players. However, a solid 70-run partnership between
Saud Shakeel and Khawaja Nafay steadied the ship. Quetta’s innings hinged on a
superb knock by opening batter Saud Shakeel. He remained unbeaten with a brilliant
88 runs off just 65 balls including two crucial boundaries to Afridi in the final
over.
Earlier, Lahore Qalandars, opting to bat
first, posted a total of 166 for 4. Openers Sahibzada Farhan and Mirza Tahir Baig
could not go long, leaving Qalandars at 39/2 after 6. Shaheen Afridi promoted
himself to number 5 and scored a well-compiled 55 runs off 34 balls, including two
boundaries and four sixes. He shared a crucial 91-run partnership with Abdullah Shafique,
who remained unbeaten on a composed 59 runs off 39 balls. However, the rest of
the Qalandars batting lineup failed to capitalize, leaving them under 170-mark.
Saud Shakeel was declared as player of the match for his brilliant unbeaten 88 runs off 65 balls.
With this triumph, Quetta Gladiators
climbed to fourth place in the points table with 11 points. With a win in their
last match, they could climb to the top two and earn a spot in the qualifier.
