PCB Officially Confirms Long-Awaited Expansion Plans.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed the expansion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with the addition of two new franchises starting in 2026. This announcement comes ahead of the 2025 season, which will be the "last six-team event" according to a PCB media release.
While the specific cities these new franchises will represent remain undetermined, the selection process is yet to begin. However, the year following the tenth season presents a period of potential change for the PSL. The ten-year lease agreements with current franchise owners are set to expire in 2025, including the Multan Sultans despite their later entry.
Importantly, all six existing owners hold the right of first refusal. This means that ownership of a franchise will only become available if a current owner chooses not to match the franchise's valuation. This right of first refusal could potentially impact the dynamics of franchise ownership in the wake of expansion.
The addition of two new teams signifies the PCB's confidence in the growth and potential of the PSL. This expansion is likely to generate increased fan engagement, commercial interest, and potentially, a wider pool of cricketing talent for the league.
